my stay in brașov was pretty brief, but i still managed to see most of the city, as well as some of the surrounding area.
first of all, here are some pictures of the town square:
most of the sights, however, are a little ways out from the city itself. during my stay, i decided to visit Peleș Castle, Bran Castle and Rașnov Citadel, all of which were part of a tour offered by the hostel i stayed at (Kismet Dao– they’re amazing, check ’em out).
Peleș was actually adorable and there were lots of good picture opportunities. The tickets for the tour were also pretty cheap (5 lei for students), although if you wanted to take photos inside, you had to pay an additional tax of 32 lei. I definitely think it was worth buying that though, if only for amazing ‘grammable pics of chandeliers and mirror selfies…
Bran Castle was obviously cool (Dracula’s home duh) but I have to admit the inside was a lot barer than I thought it would be and we would have benefitted from having a map. Also it was difficult to get a good angle for a shot of the outside of the castle.
Rașnov Citadel was nice although if I’d have known there was a dinosaur park next door, I would’ve gone there instead… The views from the top of the citadel were great and the photos were made even better by the flag Mike provided us with lol.
the next day, Tanner and I decided to take the cable car up Tâmpa, which is the mountain in Brașov that houses the ‘Brașov’ sign (visible in my first pic) A single upward journey costs 10 lei and a round-trip costs 16.
We climbed the sign (I’m not sure if you’re actually allowed to but most tourists do) and then we went a little further up the path.
We found a place with gorgeous views of the city and took some boss-ass photos there as well.
We then hiked down the mountain, which only took around 40 minutes, so I’d definitely advise only buying a single journey on the cable car if you have the time to spare. The path is well-shaded and it’s generally a pleasant walk. Check if it’s rained the day before though because the trail tends to get slippery and could be dangerous.
Once back in town, we decided to explore the Black Church. If I’m honest, the outside is more ornate than the inside, so i’ll leave it to you to decide if you’d like to pay the admission fee or spend your time elsewhere.
We also saw Rope Street, which is one of Europe’s narrowest streets.
Tanner and I then parted ways and he went to the citadel whilst I went to the Art Museum. Although I read online that it’s Romania’s best art gallery, I have to admit I was fairly disappointed. There were 2 floors (although it was more like 2 rooms) and there weren’t enough works to keep me occupied for more than around half an hour. It’s nice enough for a quick trip but I wouldn’t plan a day centred around it.
so that’s it for brașov! although most of the touristy things are situated outside of the city itself, i’d still say it’s worth a visit. if you ever find yourself in romania, it’s for sure one of the transylvanian cities you should see!
